“I went to the studio and I wanted to whine”: Ayra Starr on her new track Tornado

Ahead of her Boiler Room set, the Grammy-nominated artist let EE72 in on her pre-show routine and what she’d be doing if she weren’t a global Afrobeats star.
Few artists embody the global rise of Afrobeats quite like Ayra Starr. Still only 24, the Nigerian singer has amassed millions of listeners, collaborated with everyone from Rema and Tyla to Coldplay, and earned two Grammy nominations along the way. “If I wasn’t doing music, I think I’d literally be unemployed,” giggles the artist. As she enters her latest chapter with the release of her “grandiose” track Tornado, Starr joins EE72 to discuss the dance move that inspired it, her pre-show rituals and the realities of living life in the public eye.
