Between Spice Girls rehearsals and a Versace show in Milan, in 1997, Victoria Beckham spent a weekend at Donatella Versace’s villa on Lake Como. Here, she looks back on the photograph.

Spice Girls wrote the soundtrack to the 90s. Along with her fellow bandmates, Victoria Beckham experienced deafening fame across the decade, selling out the biggest global venues, including Madison Square Garden and Wembley Stadium, and was welcomed in palaces and opulent opera houses alike. The space that left the biggest impact? Lake Como’s Versace Villa Fontanelle. “I love everything about this picture. I was rehearsing for the Spice Girls tour, and Donatella had flown me and my best friend out for the Versace show in Milan, which was so incredibly sweet,” says Beckham. “Afterwards, she drove us back to Lake Como and we hung out with her brother Daniel and her daughter Allegra who happened to be a huge Spice Girls fan. It was such a lovely time. I remember it like it was yesterday.”

Now, in a new era of her career, as she continues to forge fashion and beauty empires, Beckham views the spaces she visits as sources of inspiration. “I love visiting contemporary art galleries such as the Whitney in New York and Tate Modern in London. I always leave feeling inspired by the collections, the use of color, form and composition. Those visits often spark ideas that find their way into my collections, whether through a colour palette, a silhouette or an unexpected detail.”

I love everything about this picture. I was rehearsing for the Spice Girls tour and Donatella [Versace] had flown me out for the Versace show in Milan… and then onto Lake Como. It was such a lovely time, I remember it like it was yesterday.
