The eye has to travel: The Row’s worldly ease

For Spring-Summer 2027, Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen gave The Row a bohemian, crafty and timeworn character. Anders Christian Madsen reviews the show.

At The Row on Wednesday morning, Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen loosened the grip. The exacting minimalism that has turned the brand into fashion’s most copied language was infiltrated by something softer and more bohemian: antique lace, embroidered ribbons, beads, fringe and fabrics that looked collected rather than commissioned.

The foundation remained unmistakably The Row – immaculate trousers, languid tailoring, precise shirts – but it was disrupted by little acts of decoration. Floral ribbons fastened trousers, beads circled necks, lace was knotted around shoulders, and delicate camisoles had an almost homemade quality.

There was something faintly backpacker-ish about it, albeit the kind who sends the luggage ahead. The fantasy of things discovered on travels or pulled from an old trunk brought warmth to a wardrobe whose power normally lies in austerity. The Row didn’t abandon its restraint. It simply made it feel more lived in.
